Patal Bhaji Sambhar Vedhmi Dal Fry

A gujarati sweet made in form of stuffed roti akin to Maharashtrian recipe Puranpoli.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups toor dal
  • 10 tbsp wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 5-6 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 2 tsp cardamom (elchi)
  • water as required
  • ghee to apply
  • Soak dal for one hour, cook till soft and drain excess water.
  • Heat the tawa, pour cooked dal in it and add sugar. Let it on medium flame till it comes to boil and water disappears to give thick consistency.
  • Now put elchi (cardamom) powder and poppy seeds in it and keep it aside to cool.
  • Meanwhile, prepare a smooth dough out of wheat flour, oil and water. Kindle very well. Keep the dough aside for 15-20 minutes. Divide the dough into 8 portions and form balls.
  • Take one dough ball and roll and form a small round (chapati) out of it. Put 2 tbsp of the stuffing in the center of the round and then cover the stuffing by gathering sides at the center and stick together. Now again roll out a round.
  • Put the round on a tava (pan). Cook both the sides simultaneously.
  • When both sides turn light brown take it away from the tava and apply some ghee on it.
  • Similarly prepare the vedhmis from remaining balls.
  • Serve hot.
