Patal Bhaji Sambhar Vedhmi Dal Fry
Sambhar

A mild spicy dal from south India, served with dosas, idlis and vadas.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 potato
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomato
  • ½ chopped brinjal (eggplant)
  • 1 drumstick
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • 1 pinch garam masala
  • 1 tbsp sambhar masala
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 finely chopped green chilies
  • 2 dry red chilies
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 pinch asafetida
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste
  • coriander leaves for garnishing
  • grated coconut for garnishing
  • 1-2 glasses of water
  • Soak toor dal for 1 hour and then cook them till soft. Remove the excess water from it and blend nicely.
  • Cut all the vegetables (potato, onion, tomato, eggplant, drumstick) into medium sized pieces.
  • Heat oil in a deep vessel. Temper with dry red chilies, mustard seeds, urad dal, asafetida, curry leaves and green chilies.
  • Add all the vegetables except tomatoes. Cover the vessel and allow them to cook till soft.
  • When soft, add tomatoes, salt, red chili powder, garam masala, sambhar masala, sugar and water.
  • Now add the blended dal and bring it to boil. Garnish with grated coconut and coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with dosa /uttappa /mendu vada /idli.
